Extracurricular Activities at BMS

The Art Club gives students a chance to build their creative and artistic skills in a welcoming and collaborative environment. Each meeting focuses on a different theme or technique to practice. This club meets once a month and runs throughout the school year.

The Battle of the Books is an extracurricular opportunity for students who enjoy reading and discussing books.  Students are given a list of books to read.  Students compete against their peers on content related questions pertaining to the assigned books.

Best Buddies is a club that seeks to connect children of all ages who have intellectual and developmental disabilities with buddies to form and maintain friendships. This allows all students social outlets and inclusion in activities.

The mission of ITS is to honor student achievement in the theater arts. High school inductees are known as Thespians and junior high/middle school inductees are known as Junior Thespians. ITS is a division of the Educational Theater Association (EdTA). BMS offers membership to students who have earned qualifying points by participating in BMS plays and musical productions. There is a leadership team of elected students within the organization.

Students at all grade levels are selected for the math teams based on a tryout test. Students from algebra and geometry will compete in the Interscholastic Math League four times throughout the year against middle and high schools. These math teams also compete in a variety of contests, including the MBA 6th Grade Invitational and the State competition held at MTSU.

Model United Nations is an activity for students who want to learn about other countries.  Students, in teams of 2-4, research a country of their choice.  Finding a problem that could be shared at the Model UN, students prepare a presentation. On the day of the conference, students present the resolution to the Model United Nations, which consists of other students.  Teams form and select a country in late August. Teams meet weekly to prepare for the conference which is held in November.

The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Brentwood Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization.  The group focuses on community service and developing leadership skills. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in these areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, and service. Students are selected to be members by a Faculty Council which bestows this honor each year upon qualified students on behalf of our school. Students apply for membership after the third nine weeks of their 7th grade year.

Quiz Bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more.  Students compete in regional, state and national competitions.  Weekly practices and study sessions are expected of all team members.  Members are determined based on ability and interest.

A team of 15 students work on teamwork and problem solving to prepare for 23 exciting events.  There are a variety of events in earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computers and technology.  Students of any grade level may try out for this competitive academic team. Students are tested in these areas via building projects, labs, and tests at a variety of competition events during the season.  It begins in late September and competitions start in January and typically last through April.

STARS (Students Taking A Right Stand) leaders will create awareness campaigns, wellness activities, and prevention initiatives each month to help promote the well-being of all students within the community. STARS leaders will collaborate on and participate in various charity projects and events. Some charity projects that students will participate in may range from Red Ribbon Week to Self Esteem Building to Anti-Bullying, while charity events may include food or clothing drives, toy collections, etc.

Student Government provides a forum for student expression, to inform students and faculty, to promote good relationships between the students and faculty, to better the welfare of the school, to assist in planning student activities, to promote community service, to promote school spirit and good citizenship, and to provide leadership for the student body.  The Brentwood Middle SGA consists of an executive board and representatives.  The executive board is made up of a President, Vice-President, and Secretary from the 8th grade.  Representative elections for rising 7th and 8th graders are generally April-May.  After school has been in session for at least a month, 6th grade representatives are then voted upon.

Students can participate in a variety of gaming activities at school after school.  This gives students an opportunity to interact socially with others who share their interests.

The goal of the Viking Pride Club is to celebrate, encourage and support our school across various athletics.  This club helps coordinate pep rallies and will help develop activities for Cancer Awareness Night.

Politicians needed.  Would you like to sit in the seat of a State Senator?  You might have the chance if you participate in Youth in Government.  In this program, students learn about the process of presenting a bill.  As members of the Senate or House of Representatives for a day, students present bills and vote on the bills presented by other students.  Forming teams in February, students meet weekly to prepare for the conference in May.

Crochet club is for anyone who has an interest in crochet.  Skill level can range from beginner to expert, and there are members who are happy to teach newcomers.

This is a non-denominational Christian ministry encouraging students in community and fellowship.  You need not be an athlete to attend,  All are welcome!
